Dear reader,

We proudly present the third digital edition of NExsT magazine, Prysmian’s publication on the worlds of broadband and telecom. In this issue, we’ll be taking a closer look at Smart Urban Spaces and Smart Grids, together with experts from Royal Philips N.V. and the Fibre to the Home Council. To support the increasing number of people living in cities whilst boosting sustainability and economic power, ‘Smartness’ is an absolute necessity. But can today’s networks support these applications? What needs to be done and which steps are policy makers taking?

This edition examines Europe’s Digital Single Market activities and how they relate to the EU’s future competitiveness, as well as a recent roundtable in the European Parliament, organised by Prysmian. Here, Europe’s future and the role of passive infrastructure in the Digital Single Market were discussed. We also cover a recent European study, which shows how FTTH⁄B users are far more satisfied with their broadband solution than DSL customers.

Of course, this issue includes some ‘extreme engineering’ features. We cover record-breaking Prysmian projects in Australia, and another in Italy, in which various types of cabling were supplied to run along 1,100 kilometres of new high-speed rail lines. We’re also revisiting the Square Kilometres Array radiotelescope project, as discussed in issue 1 of this year.

In this publication, Prysmian Group wishes to share its views on the telecoms world and industry, whilst also offering a platform for discussion. As ever, we’re interested in your feedback, suggestions, questions and opinions. So if there’s anything you’d like to share with us, please contact us at [email protected].
