EU proposes cross-border access to online content

The European Commission has proposed new regulations for access to online content services across country borders. Europeans traveling within the EU may lose access to online services that provide films, games, music, e-books or broadcasts paid for in their home country.

A newly proposed regulation on the cross-border portability of online content services addresses these restrictions. If ratified, it could allow EU residents to travel with the digital content they have purchased or subscribed to at home. Furthermore, the Commission has outlined its vision of a modern EU copyright framework.

Massachusetts Town Proves Gigabit Demand

LeverettNet was built by and for the Town of Leverett, Massachusetts as municipal infrastructure for telecommunications. Since the municipal provider started offering gigabit broadband in April, more than four out of five households in the town have signed up for the high-speed service. Granted, the town boasts fewer than 2,000 residents in total, but the adoption rate is still stunning evidence that gigabit demand is on the rise.

'The New Big is Small' focuses on North American Telecom market

With the tag line ‘The New Big Is SMALL’, the North American Prysmian Group Telecom division presented its comprehensive product portfolio featuring small diameter cables at the Outside Plant Expo 2015 in Denver, USA. “Interest from new & existing customers was very positive,” says Steve Szymanski, Prysmian Group VP Telecom Business.”

“A competitive environment has given birth to 130 gigabit projects underway or near term slated in North America. That’s roughly 100 more than one year ago. Broadband and FTTH providers are demanding cables that enable more bandwidth capability but in a smaller form factor. The net benefit for the customer is a lower TCO, from Capex or Opex perspective.”

“There is a broad consensus in Europe that more grids will be needed for a sustainable, de-carbonised and competitive energy market”, states Raul Gil, Chairman of the Europacable Utilities Board. “Submarine and underground cables will play a critical role in complementing overhead lines.”
